VMware: Hybrid Cloud Extension (HCX) – Introduction

In this blog post, I would like to give an introduction off VMware HCX or VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension. This service provides an easy method to migrate, rebalance workloads and optimizing DR scenarios cross datacenters and multiple Clouds.

What are the benefits of VMware HCX?

When companies start thinking about Cloud, they already find some limitations and questions. How can and will they migrate application between on-prem and the cloud? How will the network traffic be? What changes do they have to make to their existing SDDC or even the applications? And many more questions are asked.

Because of those questions, VMware came with HCX. It is used as a solution to provide a bridge between the on-prem and your cloud service to facilitate many possibilities. Some of them are listed below:

  • Migration of many virtual machines to the cloud and in reverse. This can be done in parallel over a secure and WAN-optimized overlay using a VPN, Direct Connect, etc.
  • Easy on-boarding of a hybrid cloud solution
  • While HCX can reuse the network layer from on-prem, a low downtime disaster recovery solution could be used.

Which licenses are used for HCX?

The features that are available in HCX, are depending on the license that you have. HCX has two different licenses, which are explained below.

HCX Advanced is packaged into NSX Data Center Enterprise Plus, VMware Cloud on AWS, VCF Enterprise, and VMware Cloud Provider Partners.

The services used in the advanced license are:

  • Interconnect
  • WAN Optimization
  • Disaster Recovery
  • vMotion Migration
  • Network Extension
  • Bulk Migration

HCX Enterprise is available for purchase to NSX Enterprise Plus customers. This license includes the following services/features:

  • OS Assisted Migration (OSAM)
  • Replicated Assisted vMotion (RAV)
  • Site Recovery Manager (SRM) Integration
